ROOFTOP TENT BUYING GUIDE
A specification-led comparison of representative two-person soft shells, Galaxy Light, and TOPOAK full-size hard shells.
Specification snapshot: July 2026
Rooftop tent buyers are often presented with two familiar choices.
A soft-shell rooftop tent can use a folding platform to create a large sleeping area while keeping its closed footprint relatively compact. A full-size hard-shell rooftop tent typically places greater emphasis on mattress comfort, interior room, storage capacity and an enclosed rigid shell.
Galaxy Light introduces a third option.
It is a lightweight hard-shell rooftop tent designed to combine an aluminum shell, a 4.9-inch closed profile and two-person sleeping space without moving into the weight and dimensions of a full-size hard-shell system.
This comparison looks at price, weight, closed height, sleeping space, setup, interior features, weather protection, maintenance and long-term vehicle use to explain where each design places its priorities—and why Galaxy Light may offer the right balance for campers who specifically want a lighter, slimmer hard shell.
How We Built This Comparison
Soft-shell rooftop tents vary widely, so broad category statements can hide the trade-offs that matter most.
To keep the comparison concrete without turning it into a brand ranking, this guide uses three current two-person soft-shell products as representative samples:
| Reference model | Net weight | Closed height | Sleeping footprint | Mattress |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft-Shell Sample A | 90 lbs | 12 in | 80 × 43 in | 2.5 in |
| Soft-Shell Sample B | 110 lbs | 11 in | 82 × 43 in | Not used as a comparison claim |
| Soft-Shell Sample C | 122 lbs | 9.5 in | 84 × 47 in | About 1.6 in |
| Galaxy Light 51 | 110 lbs | 4.9 in | 77 × 45 in | 1⅝ in |
| Galaxy Light 56 | 136 lbs | 4.9 in | 77 × 50 in | 1⅝ in |
These three soft-shell samples illustrate different design directions: minimum weight, the same net weight as Galaxy Light 51, and a narrow folded footprint that leaves more room on the roof. They do not represent every soft-shell rooftop tent or an industry average.
For full-size hard-shell references, this guide uses current TOPOAK models:
| TOPOAK full-size hard shell | Net weight | Closed height | Sleeping footprint | Mattress | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Pro | 165 lbs | 8 in | 79 × 52 in | 3 in | 2 adults + 1 child |
| Nebula | 187 lbs | 7.5 in | 78 × 51 in | 3 in | 2 adults + 1 child |
Quick Comparison
| Comparison | Representative 2-Person Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | TOPOAK Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main design priority | Folding efficiency, weight options and expanded sleeping layouts | Lightweight, low-profile hard-shell balance | Mattress comfort, interior room, storage and capacity |
| Reference weight | 90 / 110 / 122 lbs | 110 / 136 lbs | 165–187 lbs |
| Reference closed height | 12 / 11 / 9.5 in | 4.9 in | 7.5–8 in |
| Reference sleeping footprint | 80 × 43 / 82 × 43 / 84 × 47 in | 77 × 45 / 77 × 50 in | About 78–79 × 51–52 in |
| Mattress direction | Sample range includes approximately 1.6–2.5 in | 1⅝ in standard mattress; compatible Air & Foam upgrade available | 3 in |
| Closed structure | Folded tent body with a fabric travel cover | Rigid aluminum hard shell | Larger rigid hard shell |
| Main strength | Broad choice of weight, footprint and expanded sleeping space | Hard-shell form at a lower weight and closed height | Comfort, room, closed storage and additional capacity |
| Main consideration | Height, folding direction and travel-cover operation vary by model | Closed storage is limited | Larger overall system and higher vehicle load requirement |
| Best fit | Buyers prioritizing a specific soft-shell layout, roof footprint or minimum weight | Two-person campers who specifically want a lighter hard shell | Buyers prioritizing mattress comfort, capacity and interior room |
Galaxy Light is not presented as the absolute lightest rooftop tent or the roomiest hard shell. Its position comes from combining three characteristics that do not always appear together: a rigid aluminum shell, a weight starting at 110 lbs and a closed height of only 4.9 inches.
1. Price: What Are You Actually Paying For?
The old shortcut that “soft shells are inexpensive and hard shells are expensive” no longer describes the entire market.
At the time of this review in July 2026, the three representative soft-shell samples ranged from a current sale price of approximately $1,360 to $2,499.
Prices and promotions change, but the snapshot makes one point clear: shell type alone does not determine price. Some premium soft shells cost more than Galaxy Light, while some sale-priced soft shells sit close to it.
| Price consideration | Representative Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price range | Broad, from value-focused to premium | Positioned as an accessible lightweight hard shell | Reflects a larger sleep system, mattress and structure |
| What the price mainly supports | Folding platform, sleeping layout and model-specific features | Aluminum shell, low profile, lower hard-shell weight and integrated camp features | Mattress comfort, capacity, storage and broader interior configuration |
| Capacity emphasis | Depends on the selected size | Designed specifically for one or two adults | Commonly supports an additional child in current TOPOAK examples |
| Feature integration | Sample A includes an interior LED; Sample B adds panoramic skylights, four storage pockets and a heater/A/C port; Sample C adds dual skylights, mosquito screens and interior storage. | Anderson power port, heater port, lighting, skylight, ventilation and roof channels | Comfort, storage and accessory integration across a larger platform |
| Best value question | Does this soft-shell layout match the vehicle and sleeping-space priority? | Is the buyer willing to pay for a light, low-profile hard shell rather than only the lowest price? | Will the added comfort and capacity be used regularly? |
2. Weight, Closed Height and Vehicle Fit
Tent weight is important, but it should never be evaluated alone.
A complete vehicle-fit decision should consider:
- Tent net weight
- Closed height
- Closed roof footprint
- Vehicle dynamic roof-load rating
- Rack and crossbar dynamic capacity
- Crossbar spacing
- Mounting width and bracket compatibility
The lightest rooftop tent is not automatically the lowest-profile tent.
| Vehicle consideration | Soft-Shell Sample A | Soft-Shell Sample B | Soft-Shell Sample C | Galaxy Light 51 / 56 | TOPOAK Full-Size Hard Shell |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net weight | 90 lbs | 110 lbs | 122 lbs | 110 / 136 lbs | 165–187 lbs |
| Closed height | 12 in | 11 in | 9.5 in | 4.9 in | 8 in |
| Closed-form direction | Shorter folded body, taller profile | Shorter folded body, taller profile | Long and narrow folded body | Full-length, ultra-low hard shell | Full-length rigid hard shell |
| Vehicle load planning | Lowest reference weight | Same weight as Galaxy Light 51 | Between Galaxy Light sizes | Lower than current TOPOAK full-size hard shells | Requires more dynamic load capacity |
| Garage-clearance contribution | Model adds 12 in before rack height | Adds 11 in before rack height | Adds 9.5 in before rack height | Adds 4.9 in before rack height | Adds 8 in before rack height |
A representative 90-lb soft shell is 20 lbs lighter than Galaxy Light 51, but it closes to 12 inches rather than 4.9 inches. The two sleeping areas are nearly identical in size: 80 × 43 inches versus 77 × 45 inches.
Another representative soft shell weighs exactly 110 lbs—the same as Galaxy Light 51—but closes to 11 inches. At the same tent weight, Galaxy Light reduces the tent’s closed height by approximately 6.1 inches.
The third sample weighs 122 lbs and closes to 9.5 inches, with an 84 × 47-inch sleeping footprint. Galaxy Light 56 is 14 lbs heavier and has a slightly smaller total bed area, but it is approximately 4.6 inches lower when closed and provides a wider 50-inch sleeping surface.
Compared with TOPOAK full-size hard shells, Galaxy Light 51 is 55 lbs lighter than Galaxy Pro and 77 lbs lighter than Nebula. Galaxy Light 56 is 29 lbs lighter than Galaxy Pro and 51 lbs lighter than Nebula.
3. Setup, Pack-Down and Campsite Footprint
Modern soft-shell rooftop tents are not necessarily difficult to use.
Soft-Shell Sample A is officially described as an under-one-minute, three-step setup. That is slower than Galaxy Light’s approximately 30-second pitch or pack-away time, but it is not a ten-minute construction project.
The more useful comparison is how the structures operate around the vehicle.
| Campsite consideration | Representative Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup process | Uncover and unfold, depending on model | Direct gas-strut-assisted pop-up | Pop-up, wedge or X-frame operation |
| Reference setup time | One sample is listed at under one minute | Approximately 30 seconds | Varies by structure |
| Travel cover | Common | No traditional soft travel cover | Usually no traditional soft travel cover |
| Fold-out platform | Common in the reference samples | No | Depends on model |
| Sideways campsite footprint | Often extends beyond the vehicle side | Remains close to the roof footprint | Pop-up and wedge models remain close to the roof footprint |
| Exterior fabric handling | Depends on cover and folding design | Fabric is enclosed beneath the shell when closed | Fabric is enclosed beneath the shell when closed |
| Main structural value | Expands sleeping area from a smaller closed footprint | Direct hard-shell operation in a light, low-profile package | Direct operation with additional room or comfort |
4. Sleeping Space, Mattress and Real Comfort
Galaxy Light is designed around two-person use.
Its standard mattress is thinner than the mattresses in current TOPOAK full-size hard shells and thinner than Soft-Shell Sample A. That is one of the clearest trade-offs created by the 4.9-inch closed profile.
| Comfort consideration | Soft-Shell Sample A | Soft-Shell Sample B | Soft-Shell Sample C | Galaxy Light 51 / 56 | TOPOAK Full-Size Hard Shell |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeping footprint | 80 × 43 in | 82 × 43 in | 84 × 47 in | 77 × 45 / 77 × 50 in | About 78–79 × 51–52 in |
| Approximate bed area | 23.9 sq ft | 24.5 sq ft | 27.4 sq ft | 24.1 / 26.7 sq ft | 27.6–28.5 sq ft |
| Mattress | 2.5 in | Varies by product configuration | About 1.6 in | 1⅝ in standard | 3 in |
| Sleeping capacity | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 adults | 2 adults + 1 child |
| Inflatable mattress use | A suitably sized aftermarket inflatable or self-inflating pad can be used while the tent is open. | A suitably sized aftermarket inflatable or self-inflating pad can be used while the tent is open. | A suitably sized aftermarket inflatable or self-inflating pad can be used while the tent is open. | Official size-matched Air & Foam Mattress available for both Galaxy Light sizes. | Compatible Air & Foam options are available for selected TOPOAK models. |
| Mattress storage when closed | Added pad must be fully deflated; no model-specific confirmation that it can remain inside. | Added pad must be fully deflated; no model-specific confirmation that it can remain inside. | Added pad must be fully deflated; no model-specific confirmation that it can remain inside. | The official Air & Foam Mattress can remain inside when fully deflated. Bulky bedding should still be removed. | More closed-storage room; follow the closing guidance for the selected model. |
| Main design priority | Low weight with a full two-person bed | Same weight as Galaxy Light 51 with a folding platform | Narrow roof occupancy and a long bed | Low-profile hard shell with two-person space | Mattress comfort, space and additional capacity |
Galaxy Light 51 and Soft-Shell Sample A have almost the same total sleeping area. Galaxy Light 51’s bed area is approximately 0.7% larger, despite being 3 inches shorter, because it is 2 inches wider.
The trade-off is not bed area. Galaxy Light 51 is 20 lbs heavier and uses a thinner standard mattress, while reducing closed height by 7.1 inches and replacing the soft travel-cover structure with an aluminum hard shell.
Galaxy Light 51 has approximately 1.7% less bed area than Soft-Shell Sample B, while being 6.1 inches lower when closed at the same 110-lb net weight.
Galaxy Light 56 retains approximately 94% of Galaxy Pro’s bed area and approximately 97% of Nebula’s bed area. It reduces weight and closed height, but it does not retain the same 3-inch mattress, additional child capacity or closed storage allowance.
Optional Comfort Upgrade
TOPOAK offers size-matched Air & Foam Camping Mattresses for both Galaxy Light 51 and Galaxy Light 56. The optional mattress combines air and foam support with adjustable firmness. Once fully deflated, it can remain inside Galaxy Light when the tent is closed; bulky bedding should still be removed before pack-down.
The three representative soft-shell samples can also use suitably sized aftermarket inflatable sleeping pads while open. However, their current product information does not provide model-specific confirmation that an added pad can remain inside when the tents are folded and closed.
5. Interior Features and Camp-Ready Equipment
A lightweight rooftop tent does not necessarily have a basic interior. The three representative soft-shell samples each retain useful camp features, but they prioritize different combinations of lighting, views, ventilation, storage and climate-control access.
The useful comparison is not whether a tent simply “has features,” but which systems are integrated into the tent and how much weight and closed height are required to carry them.
| Interior feature | Soft-Shell Sample A | Soft-Shell Sample B | Soft-Shell Sample C | Galaxy Light | Full-Size Hard-Shell Sample |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Interior lighting | USB-powered interior LED included; a separate USB power source is required. | No integrated interior light listed; exterior lamp attachment points are provided. | No integrated interior light listed; exterior lamp attachment points are provided. | Integrated LED lighting with adjustable brightness, three color modes and remote control. | Integrated LED lighting. |
| Integrated power | No built-in power panel listed. | No built-in power panel listed. | No built-in power panel listed. | Built-in Anderson connection with USB, USB-C and 12V outputs. | Built-in Anderson connection with USB, USB-C and 12V outputs. |
| Heater or A/C access | No dedicated duct port listed. | Built-in side port for heater or A/C ducting. | No dedicated duct port listed. | Built-in approximately 2¾-inch heater or A/C duct port. | Built-in heater duct port. |
| Skylight and exterior views | Large side openings; no dedicated ceiling skylight is listed. | Panoramic ceiling skylights and large wall windows. | Panoramic rear opening and dual skylights. | High-definition TPU skylight and multiple side openings. | High-definition TPU skylight and multiple openings. |
| Ventilation and insect protection | Multiple screened openings provide airflow. | Mesh panels at the doors and windows with breathable tent fabric. | Panoramic opening, dual skylights and mosquito screens. | Multi-side ventilation, mesh insect protection and anti-condensation canvas. | Mesh openings, ventilation and anti-condensation canvas. |
| Interior storage | Two detachable storage pockets. | Four internal mesh pockets. | Internal storage pockets. | Multiple interior storage compartments plus exterior shoe storage. | Interior storage with more available room. |
| Comfort upgrade | A suitably sized aftermarket inflatable or self-inflating pad can be used while open. | A suitably sized aftermarket inflatable or self-inflating pad can be used while open. | A suitably sized aftermarket inflatable or self-inflating pad can be used while open. | Official size-matched Air & Foam Mattress available; it can remain inside when fully deflated. | Compatible Air & Foam options are available for selected TOPOAK models. |
The table shows that the representative soft-shell tents are not stripped-down products. Sample A combines the lowest reference weight with an included interior LED and detachable storage. Sample B emphasizes panoramic views, four internal pockets and a dedicated heater or A/C port. Sample C emphasizes a narrow roof footprint while retaining dual skylights, insect screening and interior storage.
Galaxy Light should therefore not be positioned as the only tent in the comparison with useful camp features. Its distinction is that lighting, power, climate-control access, ventilation, storage and a skylight are integrated into the same 4.9-inch, 110- or 136-lb hard-shell platform.
6. Rain, Wind and Exterior Protection
“Soft shell” and “hard shell” mainly describe the tent’s closed structure. Once a rooftop tent is open, weather performance also depends on fabric, coatings, seams, rainfly coverage, ventilation, orientation and setup.
| Protection consideration | Representative Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | TOPOAK Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed exterior | Fabric travel cover | Aluminum hard shell | Aluminum hard shell |
| Protection of folded fabric | Depends on travel-cover design | Fabric is enclosed beneath the shell | Fabric is enclosed beneath the shell |
| Reference waterproof information | Sample A lists 2,000mm tent fabric and a 3,000mm rainfly; Sample C lists 1,500WP canopy fabric | Current product page lists a 10,000mm overall waterproof rating, full-coverage rainfly and waterproof seams | Current TOPOAK references list 10,000mm rainfly specifications |
| Condensation management | Depends on fabric and ventilation | Anti-condensation canvas and mesh ventilation | Anti-condensation fabric and ventilation |
| Wind performance | No numerical wind-speed rating is currently published | Rated for winds up to 40 mph. | Rated for winds up to 40 mph. |
| Drying after wet use | Fabric and cover must be dried | Interior fabric and rainfly must be dried | Interior fabric and rainfly must be dried |
Waterproof numbers should not be treated as a simple scorecard. Brands may publish ratings for different components, such as the main canopy, coating or rainfly, and testing methods may not be identical.
Galaxy Light’s current product page lists:
- 300gsm poly-cotton blackout canvas with anti-condensation coating
- Waterproof ripstop rainfly with blackout coating
- Full-coverage rainfly
- Waterproof seams
- An overall 10,000mm waterproof rating
- Mesh ventilation and a TPU skylight
7. Maintenance and Ownership Care
Every rooftop tent requires cleaning, inspection and complete drying after wet use.
The main difference is which components receive the most attention.
| Maintenance consideration | Representative Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exterior cleaning | Travel cover and exterior fabric surfaces | Aluminum shell | Rigid shell |
| Cover inspection | Cover, zipper and straps where applicable | No traditional large soft travel cover | Usually no traditional large soft travel cover |
| Shell inspection | Not applicable | Shell surface, seals, latches and hardware | Shell surface, seals, latches and hardware |
| Fabric drying | Required | Required | Required |
| Mold prevention | Required | Required | Required |
| Structural checks | Hinges, folding frame and mounting hardware | Hinges, gas struts, seals and mounting hardware | Hinges, gas struts, seals and mounting hardware |
| Off-season handling | Lighter samples may be easier to remove | Still requires safe multi-person or assisted lifting | Usually treated as longer-term vehicle equipment |
8. Long-Term Mounting and Everyday Vehicle Use
A rooftop tent spends most of its ownership time closed rather than open.
For customers who leave a tent installed, the closed dimensions become part of daily driving, parking, storage and vehicle appearance.
| Ownership consideration | Representative Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed height | 9.5–12 in in the reference samples | 4.9 in | 8 in in current TOPOAK examples |
| Long-term mounting | Depends on height, weight and travel-cover preference | A central design use case | Common, with a larger system |
| Garage planning | Vehicle + rack + 9.5–12 in tent height | Vehicle + rack + 4.9 in tent height | Vehicle + rack + 8 in tent height |
| Closed visual form | Folded tent body and travel cover | Slim aluminum roof component | Larger rigid roof component |
| Closed storage | Limited | Limited | More room in current TOPOAK examples |
| Roof accessory integration | Depends on model | Included roof bars and top-side channels | Common across full-size hard-shell designs |
Galaxy Light integrates roof bars, top-side channels, Anderson power connectivity, heater access, lighting, a skylight and ventilation despite its 4.9-inch closed height.
9. Appearance and Vehicle Identity
Appearance is subjective, but rooftop tents visibly change a vehicle’s proportions and purpose.
| Visual consideration | Representative Soft Shells | Galaxy Light | Full-Size Hard Shells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed visual form | Folded tent body with a travel cover | Slim aluminum hard shell | Larger rigid hard shell |
| Vehicle presence | Depends on folded height and width | More restrained due to the 4.9-inch profile | More substantial roof presence |
| Design emphasis | Folding efficiency and expanded space | Minimal two-person hard-shell system | Comfort, room and full-system capability |
| Roof occupancy | Some folded designs are short; narrow designs can leave room for other gear | Full-length 51- or 56-inch shell | Full-length rigid structure |
| Buyer mindset | “Choose the folding layout that fits the roof and sleeping-space priority.” | “Keep the hard shell, reduce the size commitment.” | “Prioritize room, mattress comfort and capacity.” |
Who Is Galaxy Light Built For?
Galaxy Light should be considered when:
- You specifically want a hard-shell rooftop tent
- You usually travel alone or with one other person
- You want a 110- or 136-lb hard-shell option
- You value a 4.9-inch closed profile
- You expect the tent to remain on a daily-driven vehicle
- You want power, lighting, heater access, ventilation and roof-bar integration
- You want a size-matched Air & Foam Mattress that can remain inside when fully deflated
- You do not require family-size sleeping capacity
- You understand that closed bedding storage is limited
- Your vehicle, rack and crossbars meet the installation requirements
Final Verdict
The three designs optimize different parts of rooftop-tent ownership.
Representative soft shells show that a two-person tent can weigh less than Galaxy Light, match its weight or preserve more roof width for other equipment. They can also offer a similar or slightly larger sleeping area through a folding platform.
TOPOAK full-size hard shells show what a larger rigid system can provide: a thicker mattress, more closed storage, more interior room and additional sleeping capacity.
Galaxy Light is designed for the space between them.
It does not claim to be the absolute lightest rooftop tent, and it does not try to provide the maximum comfort or capacity of a full-size hard shell.
Instead, it combines:
- 110- and 136-lb configurations
- 4.9-inch closed height
- Aluminum hard-shell protection
- Two-person sleeping space
- Approximately 30-second setup and pack-away
- Full-coverage rainfly and waterproof seams
- Integrated power, lighting and heater access
- Integrated interior lighting, power, heater/A/C access, ventilation, storage and skylight
- Size-matched Air & Foam Mattress that can remain inside when fully deflated
- Roof bars and top-side channels
- Three-year limited warranty
A lightweight hard-shell rooftop tent built around what two people actually need.
