Got the tent, there’s plenty of space inside for us to stretch out, and the skylight at the top is way bigger than I expected. Lying inside and stargazing was such a great experience. I had an amazing night in it. I don't usually leave reviews, but this tent is definitely worth recommending!
I lived in the tent for 5 nights last week. I am totally impressed with my Galaxy 2. Easy to set up and close. It couldn't be easier. Very comfortable and I love the skylight. Plenty of room. Shoe bags are a great idea.
And then the price. An EXCELLENT value!
First off I love the tent. Great construction, not unbearably hot in the summer and not freezing in the winter. I haven’t used it in snow or terrible wind/rain but it does great with keeping the inside dry when popped up. You can tell the developers really thought about the construction of the tent. Everything is super easy to use and comes together basically with zero assembly required. I will and have recommend it to others. The mattress is great for younger people or people with good backs. Otherwise you’re probably gunna want a comforter of some type. The mounting system leaves something to be desired. If you are planning on mounting it to tube steel this is not a good idea. There’s simply not enough contact to stop it from moving around. I have hand cranked it to the point the bottom plates are flexing and it still moves in a couple days of normal driving. Granted it’s not falling off but my bars are 2” powder coated bed rails and it’s moving maybe an inch or two in all directions. I have to readjust the tent every couple days or so. Also, it may be just because the tent doesn’t have good contact with the bars but it is cracking and scratching my powder coat. I’ve actually resorted to experimenting with different ways to not only add grip but protect the bars. I’m at the point where I’m going to ask for another pair of mounting brackets (because I have three bars but the tent only come a equipped to mount to two) to hopefully add a little extra grip. If that doesn’t work I’m going to have to find a way to fabricate my own brackets. The only other thing I have a problem with is the gasket isn’t the best. I’ve had it collapsed on my truck for about a straight week and a half or steady rain and when i opened it up there was a little bit of dampness in the tent. Also the TopOak logo started to peel off and I had to glue it back on. But again, I love it and have recommended it to others. I totally think you should get it you just need to check and see if the way you are mounting it will work. If you are mounting to tube steel I probably wouldn’t recommend if you aren’t willing to put in the work to make it work. Thanks for reading and I hope this helps
Thank you for your feedback! For the best stability, we’d recommend avoiding round steel bars for tent installation, as round steel bars have a smaller contact area, they provide less friction. Using square crossbars will provide a more secure setup and help ensure a safer experience. This way, the issue can also be fully resolved.
I traveled the western US forest service, blm, state and national park lands full time for 1 yr with a Shiftpod 3. While this was a great shelter, its bulk and weight was tiresome to set up over and over in addition to it requiring a 12’x12’ footprint to erect.. I began to see the benefits of a RTT but couldn’t stomach the price.
I first heard of Top Oak when a friend pointed me to a Revere Overland YT video featuring the Galaxy 1.0. Said friend had purchased an affordable Amazon clamshell tent that was nice but had some gripes on the headspace available on standard clamshells. The Galaxy 1.0 features the additional push out which makes a huge difference in the available space inside. However, I often camp in inclement weather and had seen other designs that featured additional rain flies which I thought to be a necessary feature for my habits.
Enter another fabulous YT from Outdoor Auto https://youtu.be/1Shsr6EEuLI?si=eI9JqoOoBV4oLos4 that “announced” the Topoak Stellar (Galaxy 2.0) which iterated on the Galaxy 1.0 incorporating a lot of customer feedback from the field. Check out that video if you haven’t.
My Stellar shipped on Oct 1once they were back in stock and delivered to northern Idaho on Oct 8. The stoke was high on the fast shipment. I got it mounted the following Saturday (me and my tiny girlfriend, lifted and mounted super easy) and took it out for a test that night and we both absolutely loved every thoughtful detail packaged in this tent. Tons of room inside to stretch, dress, sit up, and maneuver around. The setup at camp is super easy and fast, especially with our bedding stored inside. The mattress it came with is comfy but as a side sleeper and winter camper I purchased a 4” r-13 rated foam/inflatable mattress. The tent closes and seals with the thicker mattress and bedding kept inside.
In addition to the crossbars, the tent has integrated rails running its length which can mount solar panels, which in the summer will help keep the sun from heating the tent. But it has ample airflow thanks to the added sky view and three entry windows, which also provides a great view of the stars.
The blackout coating is truly blackout during the day if you want to sleep in and it’s also surprisingly quiet compared to a ground tent, not to mention the added security from being elevated. We had a breezy night in a canyon on the snake river with gusts of probably 20mph, enough to rearrange our camp furniture, however the tent didn’t flap anywhere at all and I slept like a baby.
The build quality, shipping packaging, speed of delivery, integrated lightbar with 3 color temps with adjustable intensity (and remote control!), ample storage options inside, slim profile, and all of the other thoughtful and carefully implemented details make this tent a long awaited dream come true. Regardless of the price. Yet, the price is amazing, too.
If you’ve been in the market, look no further. I’m not normally a review writing type but am so stoked with this tent I had step out of my comfort zone and give Topoak the props they deserve for serving our community with such a quality and affordable option. Can’t wait to see where they go as a welcome company in the market.
@lunaroverland if you have any questions. And don’t forget to watch the above mentioned YT coving the Stellar upgrades.
